Kilpisjärvi skiing Review

Kilpisjärvi skiing Review tells the story of the many fantastic opportunities there are for the various types of skiing, whether it is cross country skiing, backcountry skiing or telemark style skiing in the backcountry of the Lapland.  The location of this high mountain plateau lake town named kilpijärvi is in the far North West arm of Finland, at the border of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The waters of the kilpis-lake meet all three of the above countries, the East of the kilpi-lake is Finland, and on the West side of the kilpis-lake is Sweden and upstream of the kilpis-lake is Norway. The kilpis-lake altitude is some 473 meters above the sea level. The exact location of the kilpis-lake is about 50 km south from the Norway town of Skibothn, and 150 km from Norway Tromssa. 280 North West of Kittilä airports, and some 429 km North West from the town of Rovaniemi.  Kilpisjärvi (Kilpis-lake) is great for the telemark skiers because of the long winter season; the reason for the cold climate is twofold. The far north proximity, parallel line, the coordinates being: 69°02′57″ North. 20°47′40″East.

Backcountry skiing at kilpis-lake

Kilpis-lake environment offers great backcountry skiing opportunities with the rolling hills of the tundra, there are vast open areas where to ski using backcountry skies. The access to these areas can be made by using the cross country ski tracks to initially get out of the town area or to ski some distance on the frozen kilpis-lake, and then to go backcountry when the landscape look suitable for the kind of experience one is after.  The daily climate conditions and the time of the season also can determine where and when to go, and how long for.  The spring season is most likely to be the most predictable over autumn and winter seasons. Caution must always be taken, because it is at relatively high altitude, 500-1000 meters, and the weather can change dramatically from one day to the next. Day one may be a brilliant calm bluebird, the next morning may be a snow blizzard with no visibility to navigate from the environment, the weather does change from one day to the next, even in the spring season the clear sunny days are followed by clouds, snow falls and winds.

Kilpisjärvi skiing Review for the first time visitors

Kilpisjärvi skiing Review communicates the information about kilpis-lake with pictures from the location, video footage, audio on video and text articles like the one you are reading here. So do watch the videos, there are currently at least 2 of them with content from the kilpisjärvi, like the Kilpisjärvi Holiday Destination video. There is also a picture gallery with picture images from the kilpis-lake, you can see the images from this link at Arctic Finland holiday destination.

The cross country ski trails loops are several, there is one that goes on the frozen kilpis-lake to the three border crossing point, from the kilpis hotel it is 38 km two ways.  The other one is around the Saana tundra, heading east from the town uphill to get around the Saana tundra and head north to get around it.  The total distance around Saana is approx 20 km from memory.  The return back to the town is done skiing south on the frozen kilpis-lake for about 5-7 km distance. The other ski trail that I have never been on is the one that goes all the way to the Halti tundra, it is a distance of some 50 km away. It is not a groomed trail, but rather a snowmobile trail that gets also used by the fat bikes. (push bikes with fat tyres). The Halti tundra is the highest point in Finland, at 1365 meters above the sea level.

 Mountain climate

The kilpis-lake climate is characteristically a mountain climate, with occasional strong gusts of winds, with thick and heavy snow falls. The seasonal temperatures also reflect the high altitude.  Kilpis-lake enjoys a cool mountain climate, with a long winter snow season stretching out well into the spring season April-May. The winter sub-zero temperatures start in October with the average low temperature for the month being -3.2 ‘C. The daily mean sub-zero temperatures last for 8 months until June the following year, with average low temperate being 3.6’C according to the Kilpis-järvi climate data.

Recreational activities at kilpis-lake

There are lot of recreational activities at kilpis-lake at all seasons of the year, currently it is the spring season in early April, so I will cover the winter snow activities here more in detail.

  • cross country skiing.
  • telemark skiing
  • snowboarding
  • snowmobile safaris
  • northern lights watching
  • ice fishing
  • peaceful cottage holidays
  • honeymoon etc

Cross country skiing at kilpisjärvi.

The most common style of skiing at kilpis-lake is cross country skiing, there are ready made and groomed trails made for the cross country skiers.  One such trail is to the three border point, the landmark where the three borders meet.  Norway, Sweden and Finland border.  The cross country ski trail from kilpis-järvi hotel to the three border point (kolmen-tasavallan-raja-tolppa) is 38km there and back  combined. The Kilpis-lake is a long narrow lake, therefore there are many trails along on the frozen ice of the lake, which the snow has covered the ice over time. The other significantly interesting cross country trail is around the Saana Tundra fell, there is also a day hut along the trail with fireplace and firewood for the traveler to warm up if needed and to cook something or to boil a cup of water.  The cross country trail starts near the kilpis-lake hotel and heads over the main road towards East, around to the back of the Saana Tundra. There is also a small tundra mountain lake behind the Saana tundra, which is barely noticeable unless really looking for it, because of the thick ice cover and the snow on top of the ice.

Mountain lake kilpisjärvi Accommodation

There are many types of accommodation available at kilpisjärvi, there is one Lapland hotel near the lake shore west of the town center.   Tundrea Lomakeskus (Holiday center) is another accommodation with facilities for caravans and cottage services. Then there is Majatalo Haltinmaa to name a few. There are also many log cabin style cabins and cottages that can be rented privately or from the Kilpisjärvi and Käsivarren eräämaa.  It is translated Kilpis-lake and the Wilderness area of the  Northern Finland forearm. A Government organization that takes care of the day huts and the overnight log cabins in the National park. You can visit their Facebook page and make inquiries on the available accommodation on the link provided here, it is also for the summer season.

Ice fishing is very popular on the mountain lakes.

The most common fish being sought after are Arctic char and Grayling.  The fish are sought out during the winter season and also the summer season.  A portable ice drill is being used to bore through an ice that may be 75cm to 100cm thick at places. The fishing line with a lure is then dropped into the ice hole and into the lake below, and with some jiggling the fish is being tempted to take a bite of the lure, and in so doing getting caught by the hook, the basic logic of fishing.

For more information on the fishing expeditions visit the website Grayling Land.  http://www.graylingland.com/ There are also links to a YouTube channel, where the fish caught can be see on video and at times by choice being released back into the water.

Mountain lake kilpisjärvi

Mountain lake kilpisjärvi as a holiday destination

Mountain lake kilpisjärvi is truly a unique location to visit, it is a high altitude mountain lake town, that in itself says a lot about the character of the location and climate.  Clean fresh water in the tundra lakes makes it a very healthy location to live in and to enjoy the life in the great outdoors. Yes, the winters are long, from October to May, and the snow starts to fall in November and keeps falling at times until April. It is the beginning of April right now and there is one meter of snow on the ground, so you can tell that the winter truly has come here to say the full season. Thank you for visiting Lapland guide.org, and I hope his article has been helpful for the information that you were seeking.
